Say “I do” to Wedding Insurance

Wedding insurance is a type of special event insurance designed to safeguard your big day. It provides financial protection against unexpected mishaps and disruptions that can occur during wedding planning, such as:

  1. Liability Coverage: This part of the policy pays for injuries or property damage during the event. For instance, if someone gets sick at your wedding or if the dance floor gets a little wild and a mirror breaks, liability coverage helps.
  2. Honeymoon Expenses: Some policies even reimburse nonrefundable honeymoon expenses if your wedding gets canceled or postponed for a covered reason.
  3. Attire and Rings: If your wedding attire gets damaged or your wedding rings go missing, the right policy can help cover the costs.
  4. Photographs or Video: If your photographer or videographer is a no-show or disappears with the photo memories of that special day, you could be compensated to retake official wedding photos. This coverage also protects you against loss or damage of the original film, negatives, or video.
  5. Gifts: This coverage gives you peace of mind knowing that you will be indemnified if the wedding gifts are lost or damaged. Those gifts are covered while at your home, at the event location or in transport between either of these locations.

How Much Coverage Do You Need?

Consider the total amount you’d lose if you had to reschedule your wedding at the last minute. Include venue costs, gown expenses, wedding rings, caterers, entertainment, flowers, cake, invitations, and postage. What Is Not Covered by Wedding Insurance?

  1. Cold Feet or Change of Heart: Most policies won’t cover you if you decide to call off the wedding due to cold feet or a sudden change of heart. There might be a few exceptions, but it’s generally not covered.
  2. Rainy Days (Not Extreme Weather): While wedding insurance can protect against extreme weather conditions, a simple rainy day won’t usually qualify for a claim.
  3. Vendor Switches After Deposits: Let’s say you’ve already paid a deposit to a vendor (like a caterer or florist), but then you decide to switch to a different one. Most policies won’t cover the costs associated with this change.
  4. COVID-19-Related Issues: If you need to cancel or postpone your wedding due to COVID-19, some policies won’t provide coverage for these situations.
  5. Disappointing Photos or Videos: If your wedding photos or videos don’t turn out as expected, insurance won’t compensate you for that disappointment.
  6. Known or Pre-Existing Conditions: There will be no coverage due to cancellation resulting from circumstances of which you are aware at the time of taking out the policy. (This may be a medical issue you are waiting to see the doctor about, but you have not had any appointment or diagnosis yet)
  7. Risky Wedding Attractions: If your wedding includes fireworks, bounce houses, live animals, or other attractions deemed risky by insurers, they might decline your policy altogether. Alternatively, some insurers may offer coverage but exclude problems related to these attractions.
